Studio Flat for Two in Central Paris
8. WHAT'S ON in Paris
?
Exhibitions &
Entertainments,
Restaurants & Routes,
Theatres
& Transport,
Maps & Museums ?
Where is the studio ? How
do we get there ?
What is there to see ? Shall we go by bus or
Métro?
These web sites have been found useful.
There
may be many more and better sites.
When you find any, please pass on their web addresses by e-mail for inclusion here.
www.1bis.com/1bis/default.asp
Click for links that are blue and
underlined. For small but detailed maps on your computer
screen or printer, especially to help you find your way on arrival, fill
in 'Adresse' as "rue St Dominique", 'Ville ou code postal' as "Paris"and
'Dept' as "75". Wait for the map, then click 'Grand Plan' and print
it.
You can also print out your 'Itinéraire' from your
'Ville de départ' right into
"rue St
Dominique".
Plan your expeditions from the studio before you leave your home in 'Trajet
RATP' for your
routes by
Métro, RER or bus.
(and see www.parisnotes.com below.)
The studio is between rue Jean Nicot (hence nicotine) and rue
Surcouf.
www.parisby.com
Full of detailed information of places to go and how to get there,
including
times and a detailed street map around the destination area, but a precise
place and its post code or Arrondissment must be entered for it to
work.
Tip: type in the Metro station nearest your destination,
even if you are going by bus.
Michelin Maps
The Michelin Travel and Guidebooks Catalogue used to be available
on the Michelin site but it has been ousted Via Michelin selling GPS
systems. It has all their various 'Paris Plans' under 'Paris'. Some are
folded maps. The handiest are pocket-sized booklets with a gazetteer.
There are several scales and some are 'Tourist' maps at 1/1000, ie,
1cm:100m which is clear enough and easy to use, walking or being driven.
They are thoroughly sensible in that they have all the one way streets
clearly marked. They are "available at all good bookshops" in UK on
order and almost any bookshop and newstand in Paris. One of the two Tome
Dom shops just outside the street door into the studio has maps.
The
best for cinemas, theatres, opera, concerts and exhibitions. A
pocket-sizes magazine, "Pariscope",
is available at any newstand and gives the week's details of "What's On"
in Paris. It is no longer available on the web.
www.parisinfo.com
An excellent site of menus on the top of the page which will be
helpful to
take in before going to Paris, especially the last, Practical Paris,
which includes
Daily Life, Money, Health, Holidays (ie French - to join in or
avoid congestion) and Worship.
www.parisdigest.com
A useful independent site with further clickable information on
monuments and museums, tours and cruises with links for ticket bookings,
hotels and restaurants, 'Wine Tasting Experience' and other attractions.
www.vacations-paris.com
An extensive web site with information on rival accommodation,
transport, history, sight seeing, tours and events with many links for
further
details and ticket bookings, in a sometimes amusingly literal, digital
translation.
www.parisnotes.com
A useful site with all the usual categories of What's On and it includes
the best maps so far which you can download for free as Adobe Acrobat PDFs.
It has the
Métro map, a brochure for
Musée d'Orsay, the
nearest large museum of 18th and 19th century art and a rare and
comprehensive map of Paris buses.
www.wcities.com/en/city/8/city.html
Many menus of useful information, including potted summaries of
the
delights and reputations of each Arrondissment.
It includes telephone numbers and location on a street map of many
categories
such as Bars (from 'Cocktail' to 'Soup'), Cafés, and Night Life (such as
Comedy,
Concerts, Dance, Theatre and Opera). There is also an Event Search by date
under many different 'Themes' including Art, Concerts, Sports or Theatre.
(Beware of back-to-front, inside-out, transatlantic system of dates !)
www.aviewoncities.com/paris
in which you can click onto over twenty potted descriptions, histories
and photographs of the major
sights of Paris,
such as
the nearby Hôtel
des Invalides with its Église du Dôme,
Pont Alexandre III and of course,
the Eiffel Tower.
www.whatsonwhen.com
In this very generous web site,
search for What's On by continent, country, region, topic or by
location and keywords and by months or dates. Under 'Feature
Destinations', near the bottom of the right hand column, select 'Paris' in
'Cities' box and fill in the dates when in Paris. Further down you can
search for What's On under 'Themes'
www.bateaux-mouches.fr/
'Cruise Boats'. for €7, and 'Restaurant Fleet', embarking at Pont de l'Alma,
every 30 minutes and 20 minutes in high season.
www.bateauxparisiens.com/english
One hour 'Sight Seeing Cruises' €9.50 every 30 minutes from the
foot of the
Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame, as well as Lunch and Dinner Cruises.
www.batobus.com
A shuttle service up and down the River by trimaran
with eight stops from Tour Eiffel to Jardin des Plantes and back.
The nearest stop to the studio is across Pont Alexandre III
and down some steps on the Right Bank and just East of the bridge.
